Information about BRNO The city of Brno was originally built as a fortress. Following the development of industry, came the growth of the suburbs. As a result, the fortifications were gradually demolished and replaced by green areas and buildings, which form the city’s ring road. The Second World War left serious damage to Brno. During the Nazi occupation, many Czech citizens were executed in the city at the Kounicové Koleje (a student residence); the result of these atrocities was the evacuation of the German inhabitants in 1945. The subsequent period of Communist rule brought the city into a period of economic and political stagnation, which Brno is still finding difficult to overcome. The Spilberk castle was founded on the hill with same name in the first part of 13th Century. At the end of the 13th Century, it was reconstructed in a Gothic style. In the 18th Century it was used as a heavy fortress, and later a much-feared prison. During WWII, it was also used as a prison by the German Gestapo. Since 1961 Spilberk has been managed by Brno City Museum. The old town hall, whose basement was built in an early Gothic style, has been in use from 1341 to 1935. The building was damaged in 1645 at the time of the Swedish wars, and was again restored to a Gothic style in 1660. Above the main entrance is a magnificent Gothic portal. In the passage ways of the town hall is famous Brno dragon and Brno wheel. The city’s Information Centre is located inside the town hall. The tower offers excellent views of the city of Brno The Petrov Cathedral, built in last quarter of 12th century is also well worth a visit.
